People prize green space in cities, and research has shown that urban green spaces offer spiritual, religious, recreation and ecotourism and aesthetic services. But there's been no good method to assess the value of those services—until now. In a new paper in Scientific Reports, Jie Chang of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and colleagues report a straightforward new method to assess them using just two variables—green space and land rent. The results showed that the same area of green space near the center of the city provided much more in the way of those services than those near the urban edge.
