For a long time, many governments supported the development of and invested in technologies which are now deemed unsustainable. Coal-fire power is one of these technologies, having been intensely promoted in the past, therefore achieving high levels of market penetration.

Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute of Energy and Climate Research and TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany, have looked into the possible pathways to phase out the use of coal-fire power (using the German case in particular), taking into account the direct impact of doing so on the economy, society, politics, as well as the technical aspects of such a change.

The results of this study point to a common approach that can better inform policy-makers when designing transformation processes not only for coal-fired power but also for other declining technologies. Click here to read the detailed analysis and conclusions.
