3 Ways Cities Can Become More Sustainable

Chan Heng Chee, ambassador-at-large with the Singapore Foreign Ministry, Singapore’s former permanent representative to the United Nations and chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew Center for Innovative Cities offers three big ideas that can help cities become more sustainable--first, that leaders and planners must begin with an overall vision of what sustainability should look like for their municipality; second, that such a vision will be difficult to achieve without the creation of institutional structures and procedures to support it; and third, that while no two cities are alike, the experiences of other cities in working toward their own visions can be an invaluable source of ideas and solutions. Chang Heng Chee was a featured speaker at the first Springer Nature “Science and the Sustainable City” summit, held in Singapore in July 2018. You can find more essays by speakers, along with other cities-related content, on “Science for Sustainable Cities.”
