Groundwater circulates through pores and cracks in the soil underground, and it's the most abundant source of fresh water on earth. It's the primary source of drinking water for half of the world’s population, and it supplies 40 percent of the water used globally to irrigate crops. It's also being extracted and exploited at unprecedented rates. In this review in Sustainability Science, Maya Velis of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands argues that understanding local groundwater characteristics and how human activities affect it will be essential for sustainable development.
